August 2, 2009 | Harvard has a great college campus and I love the architecture!   Forgot my wide-lens camera, so this is what I ended up with:

I’m no expert on architecture, but I love the columns, the stairs.  Also makes me miss college-life!  Who knows, maybe one day I’ll go to grad school again…

Old Burying Ground at Harvard Square

with 3 comments

August 2, 2009 | I was wandering around Harvard campus and came across this graveyard.  I’ll be honest, I was totally confused as to where I was because I didn’t have a map.  Soo, I don’t know what the name of this graveyard was or anything.  Let me know if you know where this is!  =)  (Thanks for the info, Linda!)

My sister thinks I’m obsessed with graveyards, but I swear I’m not.  They do make for interesting photos– especially the old graveyards.  I wonder about the names that I read on the gravemarkers.  I wonder about their lives and what type of people they were.    And then I hope that taking photos isn’t being disrespectful or anything…is it?

The Freedom Trail

with 2 comments

August 1, 2009 | On the second (full) day of our Boston trip, we followed the Freedom Trail to visit some of the historic sites of the city.   We started at the first stop on the trail, the Boston Common.  I purchased the Official Guidebook published by the Freedom Trail Foundation at the visitor center and we were on our way!

Interesting Fact: Boston Common is America’s oldest public park!

We had planned on going for a Swan Boats ride in Boston Common but there was a huge line so we skipped it and moved on.  Next was the Massachusetts State House, sitting on the edge of the park.  You can’t really miss this building– the golden dome on top glistened in the sun!  We couldn’t go in so we just snapped a few shots and walked on.   (I didn’t bring my wide angle lens so my shots were a little limited! Doh.)

New England Aquarium

with 2 comments

August 31, 2009 | Jennifer preferred the aquarium over whale watching *gasp* so we went to the New England Aquarium.  Pretty cool place! Lots of penguins and there was a HUGE tank in the middle with tons of fish, turtle, sharks, etc.

Here are some of the cute penguins:

There were also jellyfish, tropical fish, seals, and seadragons!  And of course, this Giant Pacific Octopus!  I think I was lucky to get this shot since it was very dark and shortly after this shot, the octopus hid in the back.

Aquariums are fun, aren’t they??  Next time, though, I’m going whale-watching!!

Boston Duck Tour

leave a comment »

August 31, 2009 | On our first day of the trip, Jen and I took the highly recommended Boston Duck Tour.   It’s essentially a tour bus that can go into water and become a boat!  Towards the second half of the tour, we splashed into the Charles River.  From there, I snapped some shots of some bridge.  I thought the stone (or whatever it is) looked pretty cool.

I also learned, it’s rather difficult to take really good pictures from a bus.  Plus, I forgot to bring my wide-angle lens. Arg!!   Oh well, lesson learned.

Hotel? Check!

with 2 comments

Success!  And much earlier than I expected.  Actually got it on my first bid on Priceline.com with a 3-star hotel (prior to this, I only tried 4 and 3.5-star hotels).  Maybe I should have tried a lower amount?  Oh, well.

Courtyard by Marriott Boston Downtown/Tremont
$60/night x 3 = $180 + $32.12 (taxes) = $212.12

I checked out the price on their webpage— $179/night for an equivalent room (total for 3 days: $603.86)!

Cost Summary
Airfare (Continental) $317.70
Hotel (Courtyard by Marriott) $212.20
TOTAL $529.90

Now that I’ve gotten the two biggest costs covered for the trip, it’ll be easier to budget/plan the rest of the trip.  Max for this trip is $1,000 but I’m thinking $820 should be enough.  This means 3 days, $96.70 per day for food and activities/attractions.

Priceline Negotiator!

with 2 comments

After browsing through Boston hotel prices, I’ve decided it’s time to give Priceline.com a try.

priceline.com

I went to BiddingforTravel.com to get an idea of what other people have paid, and my goal is to get a room for under $80/night at a 3-star hotel (minimum) in Copley Square, Quincy Market, or Boston waterfront.  Someone recently got a 3 1/2-star hotel in Copley Square for $75/night for 7/11-7/13 (Sheraton Boston Hotel).  Orbitz.com shows $186.50/night for the same dates, same hotel!

This is what I tried:

7/30 – 8/02 (3 nights) –> This won’t change.

Quincy Market; 4-star; $60

Quincy Market + Copley Square; 4-star; $65

Quincy Market + Copley Square + Boston Waterfront; 4-star; $70

Quincy Market + Copley Square + Boston Waterfront; 3 1/2-star; $70

I may be lowballing it but whatever, the trip isn’t for awhile so I have some time to play with it.  I did read that sometimes priceline doesn’t get it’s deals in its ‘inventory’ until closer to the date of travel.   Guess we’ll find out!

I’m excited to see how the process works!  Hopefully I can get a good deal…*keeps fingers crossed*
