Occasional Traveler

A collection of my thoughts and photos on travel.

Habla usted espanol?

Although I took Spanish roughly 12 years ago, I DO live in Texas, so I know a few basic phrases/words. You may wonder, why is this relevant? Well, because I’m thinking about Central America as the next family Thanksgiving vacation destination!

Mom’s guidelines: 4 adults, $3,000 budget + American Airlines mileage, and 9 day maximum.

I was pretty set on Belize for a good couple of weeks. I even bought a guidebook! But it IS one of the most expensive places to visit in Central America (relatively), and I ultimately crossed that off. (It’s not actually expensive to travel to Belize, but there’s a ton of ruins, and I feel that we’d get more out of those visits with a guide, which does add up!)

I eventually settled on Panama!

Like most people, all I knew about Panama before I did some research was that the Panama Canal was built in Panama.  It turns out there’s a lot more to this country!

Panama has a good mixture of things to do– city life, history, and ruins in Panama City; hikes in the mountains and coffee plantations in Boquete; and finally, water activities in Bocas del Toro!  There’s more, but from what I’ve read, those are some of the more popular and more accessible locations.  It requires some airplane and/or bus time between the locations, but I certainly don’t mind.

Next post: the trip planning process…

    • Yep! My dad wants to go during a holiday so he doesn’t have to be gone from his business and employees for too long.
